Introduction to GNYPWD
Ensuring equal rights and the full engagement and participation for all persons with disabilities is a cornerstone of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). However, young persons with disabilities remain one of the most marginalized communities and lack meaningful participation in decision making including for programs that directly impact them. At the 14th Conference of State Parties, the Permanent Mission of Finland, Ecuador, Guatemala, and Antigua and Barbuda to the United Nations, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, UNICEF, UNFPA, UNHCR, the WHO, ILO, United Nations Secretary General’s Envoy on Youth (OSGEY) and the UN Secretary General’s Disability Inclusion Team launched a Global Network of Young Persons with Disabilities (GNYPWD) to encourage meaningful participation and leadership for young persons with disabilities across the board. The network aims to increase the accessibility of young persons with disabilities to the United Nations, develop their leadership potential by encouraging participation in projects at various levels and ensure that their rights are effectively represented and addressed at regional, national and local levels. Global Network of Young Persons with Disabilities is fiscally sponsored by Angels for Angels, a 501(c)(3) organization. All donations are tax-deductible as permitted by law.
